Response To Intervention (RTI) Takes Place at BVN
A team of Belle Valley North teachers and support staff has been involved in the planning and implementation stages of a screening process that allows teachers to assess their students’ reading skills. The screening is a way for classroom teachers and the reading specialist to determine how each student is performing compared to the other boys and girls in his/her grade level.
Kindergarten, first, and second graders were initially screened in January, and the results were shared with parents at the February conferences. In early May, students were screened again to monitor their progress since the winter. Parents will again receive the information provided by the screening.
Starting with the upcoming 2008-09 school year, students will be screened 3 times per year—Fall, Winter, and Spring. With consistent screening and progress monitoring, staff will be able to determine if additional academic interventions can be used to help struggling students. Research-based intervention strategies will be utilized to meet the individual needs of each student.
As the program is developed, our goal is to include additional grade levels and math skills in the screening and monitoring process. Please continue to check the school website for updates on this new program.
