AED and CPR Training at Belle Valley

In July of 2006, it became an Illinois State Law to have an automated external defibrillator (AED) in all schools with physical fitness facilities, including a trained user on the premises.  An AED is located in each school in the district and is checked daily.

An AED is used to treat victims who experience sudden cardiac arrest.  It is only to be applied to victims who are unconscious, without a pulse, and not breathing.  The AED will analyze the heart rhythm and advise the operator if a shockable rhythm is detected.  If indicated, the AED will charge to the appropriate energy level and advise the operator to deliver a shock.

In October, 18 members of District 119 were trained in CPR and the AED course through Contemporary Life Saving Training out of O'Fallon, IL. Currently, a total of 48 staff members are trained in the use of AED and CPR.
