Is Your Child Paired with the Right Teacher?

It’s the end of summer break, and you learn the identity of your child’s teacher for the new school year. A neighbor suggests the instructor would not be a good fit for your child. Should you request another teacher? Consider the following points before you take action.

No one knows your child like you do.

Your neighbor does not know your child as well as you. And he may look for different strengths in an instructor. Ask questions about your neighbor’s concerns, but trust your own instincts.

A bad fit is not, necessarily, a bad thing.

You rarely have the opportunity to choose your authority figures. Learning to relate well to a variety of temperaments becomes a valuable strength. If the style of your child’s teacher does not mesh with your son’s or daughter’s personality, you have an opportunity to help your child learn some new relational skills.

An experienced teacher knows how to relate to a variety of children.

Experienced educators have encountered a variety of children and know how to relate to a variety of learning styles. Inquire about the experience level of your child’s assigned teacher before you insist on a change.

The principal is a great resource.

Before you insist on choosing your child’s teacher, discuss your concerns with the principal. It’s her responsibility to know her staff. She can ease your concerns. She also has the authority to change your child’s assigned teacher, if necessary.

Considering these points will help you decide to choose or not choose your child’s next teacher.
