Bright Start College Savings Program
Bright Start is Illinois’ 529 savings plan for college. Implemented in April 2000, over 135,000 people have enrolled in Bright Start and over $1.8 billion has been invested. A savings account can be opened with as little as $25, and any future contributions may be as little as $15. The money invested in a Bright Start account is deductible from an Illinois resident’s state taxes and when the time comes for the funds to be used for education related purposes, the money is withdrawn federal and state tax-free. The money invested can be used for tuition, fees, room and board, books and required supplies at most colleges around the nation.
